ElvenBenzene Super Mario Odyssey Review

Aug 17, 2026
Super Mario Odyssey is chock-full of fun and engaging mechanics that are unfortunately bogged down by the game's design philosophy. A game designed seemingly with the express intent to mock the completionists, the game has over 1100 moons to collect, but for some reason only counts up to 999. It was with the switch era of games (first with Breath of the Wild and later with Odyssey), that Nintendo wanted to make it clear that their games are not to be 100% ed for some reason, and you are doing so at your own expense. The game is for the most part small open-world sandboxes with secrets to find and a boss to defeat. You need a certain number of moons to fly to the next kingdom, and it doesn't matter how you obtain them (you can just buy your freedom). It's kind of a shame, because the platforming in this game is incredible, and the game mainly only uses it for a few optional secrets and hiding balloons for your pal Luigi. It does what Mario games do best, fluid movement, incredible platforming, but lacking a bit when it comes to the difficulty. It's exactly what you would expect. I just wish the game was a bit more difficult, and wish that the game forced me to engage with it's mechanics a bit more. Despite it's flaws, it's still a very good game, and I do still recommend it.
