Fuilares Spyro Reignited Trilogy Review

Spyro Reignited Trilogy - A Remaster of Three Great PSX Games The first time I played Spyro was on the original PlayStation. I owned the first game, and what Toys For Bob has done here is masterpiece. In the game, we control the titular dragon Spyro, as well as other characters in bonus levels. Our goal is to collect a set number of items like gems, eggs, etc., to progress to the next stage. This is a classic '90s platformer - you won’t find many gimmicks here. The game is simple and accessible to everyone. AUDIOVISUAL PRESENTATION It looks and sounds fantastic. The sound quality is impressive, and it’s a nice touch that you can switch to the original soundtrack from the main menu. All dialogue has been re-recorded, so there’s none of the heavy compression you heard on the PSX. The graphics have also been updated to meet modern standards. CONTROLS The dragon moves responsively, and I get the feeling that the controls have been ported 1:1 from the original console. However, some things have been improved - mainly the gameplay for the side characters in the third game. TECHNICAL STATE Unfortunately, I do have a few complaints here. You can’t play the game with English voice acting and Polish subtitles - you’d need mods for that. Spyro occasionally glitches in places where he should easily be able to reach. On one of the skateboarding levels, every time I retried the race, I’d lose about 15 FPS until the game dropped to 30 frames per second (despite normally running over 200 FPS on an RTX 2070 Super and i7-10gen). A few times, gems wouldn’t appear on the map, and I was searching like crazy - after dying, they finally spawned in the correct spots. SUMMARY Despite a few technical issues, the game runs almost perfectly. For me, the simplicity of the title is a plus - there’s no need for tedious level grinding or character progression. I recommend this game to everyone - it’s a true classic that’s definitely worth playing.
