From Taiwanese game developer Red Candle comes their second game about a dad walking around a decrepit apartment while thinking about his life choices. Set in the 80s, the game stars a family of three – a writer for a father, a retired actress for a mother and a singer-wannabe for a daughter. The family suffers financially, and domestic problem ensues. The campaign will take you through everything that transpired in their tumultuous lives. Devotion is a first-person horror game that will have you walking long halls, interacting with stuff and waiting for the inevitable jump scare. Too bad the Chinese are such sensitive *******.
PROS:
● For a small indie team from the Orient, this thing sure looks phenomenal to the point of photorealism, that when coupled with the game’s top-notch atmosphere will have you endure the terror to just stare a bit more at those lovely fish dishes
● Plot and overall writing are no short of excellent – a bit cliched with the domestic aspect but still every bit as effective with the game’s fascinating setting and cultural plot devices
● Terrific and utterly gripping campaign sequences that balances jump scares and pure unadulterated dread, and that shifting environment thing from Layers of Fear – and some unique ones too like that scrapbook sequence reminiscent of their earlier work, Detention
● Those mannequins sure are ******* creepy
● The developer’s intent on telling a terrific story in an utterly immersive way, and not just be a ************* pixel game with jump scares every five ******* seconds screams in the campaign
● Great devotion to immersion with the faithful recreation of 1980s Taiwanese apartment, detailed environments, and that well-produced talent show
● That entire sequence in hell will come down as some of the most disturbing and gut-wrenching **** you’ll see
● Great soundscape, from the ambience to the freaky noises to the voice acting, and those original songs too
● That P.T.-inspired jump scare in the beginning sure ******* gets me every ******* time
CONS:
● The campaign is unfortunately short in over two ******* hours long, but the terrific campaign makes out for it
● The walking sim syndrome and the classic horror game formula of doing three things first before progressing
