Gameternel The Gunk Review
Nov 26, 2025
From time to time, there comes a game that makes you go like: “Why didn't anyone think of that before?”. This game is 100% this.
It’s a very simple, short story in a sweet, beautiful environment with a captivating (although minimal) story told. You play a human that landed on this planet and that is trying to retrieve enough resources to go back home, but at the same time, you discover this planet is gripped by a kind of toxic cloud, named “The Gunk” in the game, that seems to kill all living species around it. So obviously, you decide to save the planet and learn more about this Gunk, despite your partner’s wise advice to come back and leave this planet.
Everything in this game hits good. From the very enjoyable, chill music to the landscapes you explore, you are enclined to feel at ease and to want to know more, to do more, to explore more.
This game isn’t made to punish you in your choices or to make you repeat the same sequences all over numerous times. Its interest lies in discovering and appreciating the beauty surrounding you and to have a good time.
I cannot describe how good this game approach is. I wish more studios would take a lesson from it.
Good job.
**Inspirations felt from**: Rabbit Junk (it’s actually an homage they credit in the end credits) and Rayman’s environment (for the lush jungle and the plants’ color palette)
