Gameternel The Evil Within 2 Review

First of all, I have to tell the truth: I have finished this game with the option of one-bullet kill any enemy enabled. I turned it on at chapter 3, so practically at the very start of the game (we’re speaking of something like 5 hours in), because I realized I was having much less fun in Nightmare difficulty. But since you cannot change the difficulty once the game is started, well… I made a choice. I don’t regret it, and I even asked myself whether I could have finished the first game had I lowered the difficulty. But then I remembered all the glitches and bugs, the slowness of my character when walking… No. I don’t think I will. I liked this entry. So much so I finished it. It was special to me, because rarely do I progress in any game while being surprised or curious about the story all the little notes and collectibles tell. But it was the case with this one; I knew what I was going to get (or at least some of it), but still, 10-hours deep, I was amazed to find myself eager to understand the story even more. But that doesn’t mean I wasn’t bothered by the way the story got stretched. Meaning: I was very happy with all the hostile encounters, shall I call them this way (spoiler alert). It deepened the universe, it generated some interest and overall, it told a good, interesting story. But the game presentation bias bothered me. In the trailer, you only see Stefan being presented, and you naturally think he’s the main enemy of the story. He’s not. He’s a good portion of it, but then you get Father Theodor, and then even your wife. Not even mentioning the demon version of Laura, Ruvik’s sister. By the way, anyone knows where this kid is? It’s not the fact there were several bosses to beat. It’s the sense of progression, when you feel like you’ve finished and then, clearly, you haven’t. I have felt this before, notably when playing TLOU, and it’s not a good feeling. Obviously this decision has been made to keep a part of the story in the dark, but I don’t know, it may have been even cooler if Father Theodor was part of it since the beginning, but without filling the story progression either. But when you say it this way, it feels complex to achieve. Maybe it’s a sign there was too much in the game? I’m sure they could have done even better, pace-wise. For the rest, and even with the one-bullet kill option enabled, I enjoyed my stay in Union. I was surprised by all the references the game made, but I like it. We’re clearly speaking of a game that loads your inventory like you’re a killer robot of some sort, because the quantity of guns you hold is just insane. You can have up to five versions of the same gun type at once. Five !! Some games should take inspiration from TEW2 for the range of gun fights they propose. But TEW2 should also chill haha. Some of the bosses are so creatively put together, it’s amazing. I loved the “shots” of Stefan. I loved the religious aspects of Father Theodor’s story. I definitely hate Spider Laura. I had mild jumpscares, but I have no critics to make against game’s level of discomfort/spookiness. The end felt way too long to reach. All in all, I would enjoy a TV series in this universe so, so much. I think it could be a major hit. It has all the ingredients for. To sum it up, I think this game could be called a “sleeper hit”.
