gauntlet Rain World Review
Mar 5, 2025
rain world is so good! I loved how it rewards curiosity and how learning how to play and how to interact with its world is a essential part of the experience and how very little of it is interfaced. the game is designed for players who like a bit of challenge and obscure systems. it has difficult and unfair moments baked into its design. its controls feel clunky at first but eventually you will figure out how to do quite complex and precise maneuvers. the range that rain world provides from a sense of serenity or wonder in exploring to the sense of danger and thrill of surviving wild chases narrowly is remarkable.
I found rain super immersive. like in games such as the original dark souls you are ment to learn without much interfacing but by careful measure and observation. you will eventually get better and become more cunning not by numbers going up but by improving your skill and knowledge of the ecosystem, and in particular your means of traversal and eventually(!) combat. I think it took me many hours for example to understand all the ways in which I can utilize spears and (without wanting to take too much away) only very late in the game I managed to impale a lizard with a spear, and what a thrill that was !! as you explore, you will route, strategize and carefully measure risk in order to survive. you are traversing a big interconnected world full of secrets.
again, learning how to play the game is part of its design and coherent theme. some will interpret this as inaccessible but I could'nt recommend rain world enough.
rain world has you struggle from the outset but if you manage to persevere in its harsh environments it can be a truly sublime experience like few other games imho. again, to interact with and figure out its systems, which are to be explored in the form of its game world, its biome, less through interface, is central to the experience. I would recommend to not look things up if you dont desperately need to.
side note
the game was patched several times since the original reviews and since is slightly more foregiving now.
