isocano The Plucky Squire Review
May 14, 2025
The squire looked much better in the trailers, and that ends up costing the game an extra point. The idea of mixing 2D and 3D works fine—it’s not the first or the last time we’ll see it—but it doesn’t really make the game shine in that area.
The fairytale aesthetic clearly targets a younger audience; however, the puzzles and pacing are aimed at a much more mature one. This creates a hyper-niche product with misleading marketing, since the previews didn’t show any of this.
What really drags the whole thing down is the pacing of a story designed for kids: predictable and generic. On a technical level, one of the worst aspects is how much time is wasted between context changes. I’m referring to every time a conversation or mini cutscene ends and you’re stuck waiting before you can move or do anything—it's painful.
It looked promising, but in the end it barely scrapes by with a five… and that’s being generous.
