JKaiya Prey Review
Jan 16, 2025
Prey has a unique setting, I'll give it that, but there are many detriments. There are also games that have done better, such as Control which has a much more phenomenal combat system and story, or Alien who leans into the horror and sneak mechanics a lot more yet having an engaging combat system when necessary. Prey... well other than flashy enemy animations, there isn't much to it. Other than the cool backgrounds there isn't much to the story either. It lacks sorely when compared to these two other games I've played in the past. You can tell that Bethesda semi rushed the release from just the state of its user experience of the user interface. Many of the buttons are contradictory, causing you to repeatedly mess up buttons. One such example is pressing the F key to interact, yet it is the G key to interact inside your inventory. The story and gameplay pacing is also a bit too slow paced for me. Even Alien who had a literal 30minute walking mish mash with cutscenes did a better overall job, as I was almost always engaged. In Prey it is very lackluster. Pretty environment, but nothing significant. Sometimes if youre lucky you get the same repetitive cool teleporting enemies that lack substance and are more of an annoyance to defeat than engaging.
