Rematch: an innovative game with a few cracks
Rematch is a 5 vs 5 soccer game that was developed by Sloclap (the creators of Sifu) and released in late June of 2025. I played both betas before the game launched and pre-ordered it before it came out, and I must say that this game has given me a deeper appreciation for soccer.
This game makes everyone have equivalent stats, so it is a trial of skill that really engages the player into mastering the game. Its music is adaptive based on where the ball is on the field and what someone does with it (It cuts the music in anticipation when someone shoots on target with the goal), and it emulates that feeling of a crowd in an actual game. The sound design in this game is also impressive with a range of intensity from a feather-like sound to the loud beat of a large drum when interacting with the ball. The customization in Rematch is extensive, allowing you to play on a volcano or in a jungle with your own custom character. All of these brilliant mechanics and features of the game make it enjoyable and attractive for newcomers and dedicated players alike.
However, there are minor things that can ruin the game experience for some players that are correlated to the design of the game. Interactions with the ball are based on “fighting-game” priority and not actual physics, so the ball may end up “phasing” through other players or standing completely still after two players collide with it. Additionally, camera movements may change depending on the positioning of the ball, so your shots may be a little off when the ball is sky high.
Even with these flaws, the game is still worth giving a chance if you’re interested in an innovative soccer game that allows you to express your creativity in a unique and skillful way.
