For years, Trails was a series I admired from afar, intimidated by its scale and unsure where to start. That’s no longer a problem. Trails in the Sky First Chapter Remake is the perfect gateway: modernised, fully voiced, visually upgraded, and packed with quality-of-life improvements. Combat blends real time field action with classic turn-based tactics, and switching between them feels smart and rewarding. Stun enemies in real time and swap to turn-based for an advantage - bosses stay tactical - but you’re free to play your way. It’s thoughtful and genuinely fun. The audio is magical. From refined sound design to fantastic voice acting and a reimagined soundtrack (you can swap to the original!), it all elevates the experience. I’m still whistling the main theme. QoL features like high speed mode, fast travel, and skippable animations make this the definitive way to play. The Orbment system offers deep, flexible party building for those who love to tinker, but auto-equip keeps it accessible if you don’t. But what truly makes this game special? The world, story, and characters. As the foundation of the entire series, the pacing is deliberate but rewarding. NPCs react to events, dialogue updates constantly, and Liberl - a small but technologically advanced nation - feels alive. You play as newly appointed junior bracers Estelle and Joshua, siblings by adoption, climbing the guild ranks before getting swept into something far bigger. Estelle is bright, impulsive, and endlessly charming. Joshua is calm, intelligent, and reserved. They clash and complement each other perfectly, and their relationship is beautifully written. Add a stellar supporting cast (Olivier genuinely had me laughing out loud), and every interaction feels meaningful. For me, this is cozy gaming at its finest: rich world-building, slower pacing, and characters you never want to leave. Experiencing the foundation of such a monumental series has been a joy - and after that cliffhanger ending - I’m completely invested.
