Performance/ Graphics
One of if not the best looking PlayStation 5 game to date. Pure beauty from the moment you boot up the game up to the second you turn it off. The performance has TWO options Frame Boost or Graphical Enhancement, I’ve been playing on Graphical Enhancement and it’s a buttery smooth 4K @60fps. I’ve not experienced any stuttering or any issues at all
Controls
The controls can take a little getting used to, especially when it comes to combat but once you’ve mastered them you’ll be slicing the enemies up with ease. Once you’ve gotten used to switching stances during combat you’ll feel like you’re untouchable and loving every minute of it.
Main Protagonist
Jin Sakai
This man has seen it all from the fall of Tsushima Island and back to the way things were, you experience every step along the way. Jin has conflicting emotions should he stay loyal to the Samurai way or become the things he hunts, every slice of flesh you take, every single enemy you strike down will make you feel that impact along side him.
Side Characters
* Ishikawa - Master Archer
* Lady Masako - Vengeful Survivor
* Ryuzo - Jin’s childhood friend and Leader of the Straw Hats
* Yuna - Resourceful Thief
* Taka - Yuna’s younger brother and skilled Blacksmith
Story
Act 1
Solid start to the campaign which in-turn gives a solid foundation for the other acts to build up-on.
Act 1 jumps you straight into the action no messing around, starting off with the invasion of Tsushima Island by the Mongols. You enter battle with your Lord Shimura at your side while you begin to fight back against the overwhelming odds of non stop on slaught of enemies. After a treacherous battle you find your self on a bridge not knowing that this bridge is where your journey begins.
This is where you face your first BOSS FIGHT, will you buckle under the pressure or will you find the courage to stand up and do what ever it takes to win?
Continuing on you’ll be recruiting allies to fight the wars ahead along side the GHOST to take back Tsushima Island and free Lord Shimura from captivity.
Act 2
Now Lord Shimura is released from captivity you now fully focus on the battles ahead and the main object which is taking back Castle Shimura. This act delves deeper into the escalating conflict with the Mongols and the difficult choices Jin must make to come to terms with his decision to fully embrace the GHOST and lay waste and strike fear into the hearts of his enemies.
Act 3
Revenge is your primary goal, as you escape your captives Jin focuses on gathering his remaining allies to take down khan. Now you’ve fully embraced the GHOST it is now time to take back Tsushima Island and drive the Mongols away once and for all. During the final push you will have to put all your skills to the test while confronting Khan. Now Khan is dead and you’ve fought so hard, all the blood, sweat and tears you’ve spill along the way you must muster all your remaining strength for one final dual deeply personal and emotional duel. Lord Shimura bound by honour and duty gives the order to have you killed, now during your duel you’re given a choice, look him in the eyes as a Samurai and Kill Lord Shimura the Honourable man who treated you as family, or Spare him as the GHOST knowing that your Family Bonds will be destroyed for ever and Severing your last ties to the Samurai. Do end your Legacy Honourably or do you full embrace the GHOST that choice is up to you.
Side Content
The side content adds to the story compared to other games where its just bloat to make the game feel more full and impactful. These missions/ activities aren’t just plain missions go here fetch this bring it back, these actually are quite varied and add extra lore and back stories to the side characters you meet along the way.
Addition to that there are other activities to do that will make you feel like your time isn’t being wasted, things from following Fox’s - to your typical Clearing of camps.
Gameplay
The gameplay is flawless, everything from combat to just walking around and enjoying the scenery, Everything just fits. What you would expect from a game of this style just hits every note. The way you play is completely up to you, if you want to go Head to Head in a stand-off and show the enemy who’s boss or go quite and stealthy, hide in the shadows and cut the invaders down one by one without them even knowing. The game makes you feel that immersive the time just flys by and that goes to show the talent and time the developers put into this masterpiece. The ability to be able to grab you and throw you into an 1274 Mongolian invaded Japan and have you experience the good and the bad things that went on is just pure art and should be given high praise and credit.
Combat
Weather your prowling in the shadows, on top of buildings, going head to head with your foes combat is fluid from cutting down foes with your Katana to Getting headshots with your bow, every weapon is viable and has its uses and once you find the play style you want you’ll love the experience. No matter who your enemies are they’ll wish they never met you.
Exploration
I would first like the say there isn’t any mini map, you navigate by accessing the map or journal and selecting where you would like to venture off to next and once you’ve done that if you ever get lost p/confused on where your going wiping up on the touchpad and the wind directs you to your highlighted objective. The map is split into two sections, you MUST progress through the campaign to unlock the second part of the map. There is loot scattered around the map which is useful for upgrading weapons and I recommend picking up everything you can to make the journey easier.
Environment
The environments are beautiful to look at and the scenery it just pure art, from the hilltops to the grassy fields to the ocean everything is at a very high quality. The lighting plays a massive part as well, how the sunset just hits you and makes you stop what you’re doing and soak it up and makes the game feel like you’re travelling around in a painting.
Skill Tree/ Character Progression
The skill tree (TECHNIQUES) is broken down into THREE categories.
1. Samurai | combat based
2. Stances | The ability to adapt to combat scenarios
3. Ghost | Stealth & Throwable’s
Each one of these categories has its very own skills with-in them which doesn’t look a lot but they all pack a punch within there own right, depending on your play style you can build Jin Sakai into the best Warrior, Assassin or Archer or a mix of all three you’ve always wanted to be. All skill are unlocked through progressing with the Campaign, Side Quests and clearing the whole map.
