The Destiny 2 player count on Steam dropped to an all-time low in the last 30 days, which raises some questions about the game's direction going into 2025. The steep decline in Destiny 2 players can be traced back to days after the launch of The Final Shape in June, as the decade-long Light and Darkness saga finally came to a close.

The launch of the Destiny 2: The Final Shape expansion saw Guardians from around the world team up to finish off the Witness and end the story that began with the original Destiny game in 2014. Well over 310,000 players on Steam played Destiny 2: The Final Shape during its peak in June 2024, but the surging player count was not sustained in the months that followed, despite the subsequent release of Episode Revenant in October.
