It has been a messy and troublesome few weeks for Splitgate 2 since its launch in early June, from its CEO's controversial statements to underwhelming gameplay and beyond. And unsurprisingly, it appears things have finally caught up with 1047, the studio behind the Splitgate franchise.
In a post on X today, 1047 announced that Splitgate 2 will be headed back to Beta until at least 2026 and conceded that it launched before it was ready. Further, the studio will be laying off team members and shutting down the original Splitgate servers. The FPS will remain playable for the foreseeable future to anyone who has purchased it, and 1047 will also be delivering the promised Chapter 3. Otherwise, it's back to the drawing board for Splitgate 2.
From its very inception, Splitgate 2 has been steeped in controversy, with its CEO, Ian Proulx, making the confounding decision to wear a red "Make FPS Great Again" hat at Summer Game Fest. The move was just the beginning of the game's problems, however, with players being largely underwhelmed by its lackluster gameplay and plagued by performance issues and bugs.
