Water is one of those essential things, like air and food, and without it life gets a whole lot less lively. Salt water may not be drinkable by those of us on land but there's enough going on in the oceans that without it, survival is going to be either much harder or outright impossible. That's why when the Atlantic Ocean disappeared one day, leaving behind an enormous barren wasteland, it meant more than the end of the US's hurricane season. The basin is filled with monsters and other hazards but also crossed by train tracks, and shipping goods from one part of the world to another is as profitable as it's ever been even if ships are no longer part of the equation. Mercenaries are cheap and plentiful, after all, and so long as the cargo reaches its destination it doesn't really matter if a few of them fall along the way.
