It's hard to imagine Minecraft retaining its long-running popularity without the modding scene it actively encouraged. Every possible variation on the blocky survival game has been experimented with at one point or another, and one of the most popular modded servers even saw its crew branch out to create their own Minecraft-inspired RPG. Hytale started development in 2015, and then its development studio Hypixel was bought by Riot Games in 2020. Progress reset when the engine switched from Java/C# to C++, in order to be far more workable for consoles, and while that seemed like a good idea on paper what actually happened was a long development process got even longer. More years passed until eventually this summer Hytale was canceled, a victim of ambitious scope-creep.

Canceled doesn't necessarily have to be forever, though, as evidenced by games ranging from Star Fox 2 to Tattoo Assassins.
