Divinity Has One Crucial Difference With Baldur's Gate 3

While Larian Studios' work on Baldur's Gate 3 is clearly laudable in its own right, its status as a Dungeons & Dragons adaptation, not to mention the name recognition of its franchise, certainly helped the project have immediately wide appeal. DnD's fifth edition has seen the tabletop RPG become more popular than ever, but Larian is taking another opportunity to show its turn-based combat chop with Divinity.

It has now been confirmed by Bloomberg that Divinity will be a turn-based game, and since the franchise is an original property created by Larian, it will not be a DnD adaptation. Divinity's announcement trailer contains no hint of gameplay, and since previous games in the series have been both action- and turn-based, it was previously up in the air. Larian boss Swen Vincke told Bloomberg, "I think this one is going to be way better [than BG3]."

BG3 is a rather impressive adaptation of 5e DnD, but tabletop and video game systems are not seamlessly interchangeable. Vincke noted that adapting Dungeons & Dragons was difficult, saying that, with Divinity, "we're making a system that's made for a video game. It's much easier to understand."
