Braid creator Jonathan Blow says that the game's anniversary edition has unfortunately not been a huge success. The original Braid came out on multiple platforms in 2008 and received high praise across the board. Its current Xbox 360 Metacritic score sits at a nonnegligible 93 aggregate rating, with players praising the game’s beautiful presentation, unique storytelling, challenging puzzles, and soundtrack. Many developers in the years since have lauded Braid and cited it as a key influence for their own games.
So when Braid: Anniversary Edition was announced at the end of 2023, it seemed a given that the updated version of such a memorable game would be well received. Released on last and current-gen platforms, the anniversary edition features over 15 hours of developer commentary, along with several new levels and revamped visuals and audio. And being priced at only $19.99 seemed an ideal price point to entice a new generation of gamers to check out the award-winning indie classic that many have called a masterpiece.
