Tetris 99's 42nd Maximus Cup has been officially announced by developer Arika, with a special Splatoon 3 theme taking center stage for the duration of the Cup. Tetris 99 players will be able to jump into the new tournament in just a few short weeks, with the overall theme of the Cup being inspired by Splatoon 3's Side Order DLC.
When it comes to popular puzzle games with PvP multiplayer, it doesn't get much bigger than Tetris 99. This unique spin on a classic title takes everybody's favorite game of Tetris and adds a new online component, allowing players to battle it out in gigantic 99-player lobbies. But if that wasn't enough action, Nintendo also periodically hosts special Maximus Cup events to promote other first-party titles and put some special rewards up for grabs. The tournaments usually take place over the course of a weekend, with players all over the world competing to win the most number of games within the allotted days.
Tetris 99, Super Mario Bros. 35, and Pac-Man 99 have changed the landscape of battle royale games, and plenty other classic games should join them.
