Some of the classic Twisted Metal games may be coming back in a new re-release in 2025, according to the voice of one of the series’ most iconic characters. The first Twisted Metal game was released on the original PlayStation in 1995 and introduced players to a dark world of brutal vehicular combat and colorful killer drivers. It became a commercial success, spawning numerous sequels and kickstarting a genre of demolition derby games that have attempted to replicate its formula with varying degrees of success.
The Twisted Metal series would enter a period of dormancy following a 2012 reboot on the PS3. However, interest in the series was swiftly renewed following the release of a live-action series on Peacock last summer, though there haven’t been any new game announcements since. A new, live-service Twisted Metal game was reportedly in development at Firesprite, but it would ultimately be canceled in the wake of a massive wave of layoffs at Sony earlier this year.
