Actor James Marsters spoke to Screen Rant about how Lex Luthor nearly had a completely different personality in DC Universe Online. Marsters reveals that he had just wrapped up shooting the animated film Superman Doomsday, where he had voiced a different kind of Lex Luthor. Thinking that he was called to record DC Universe Online in the same tone, he nearly gave a similar performance for the game.

In choosing the tone for Doomsday, Marsters says he thought "'It would be fun to do a quasi-Hugh Hefner sort of Lex Luthor,' it was very subtle and slightly oily and charming at the same time, kind of soft tones and trying to seduce somebody is how I approached it." Luthor in the film was described as being interested in Lois Lane, so Marsters decided to carry the voice and tone through all his lines, leading to a nuanced portrayal of the character.
