You, the trainer, can get hurt by the wild, aggressive Pokemon. You can easily swap between your active party members, and make on the fly decisions. New mega evolutions bring a fun, nostalgic, but new take on many existing favorites. You can mega evolve anytime you've collected enough energy, which is easy, just play, and you can mega evolve outside of combat!
