NobleGamer SteamWorld Build Review

Jun 12, 2025
I've enjoyed all the other SteamWorld games so far, and I enjoyed this one...to a point. In the end, I can't recommend this to most gamers because I found it to be a weak city builder and a weak underground tower defense game that I don't think is worthy of being called dungeon management. If this were truly a casual city builder, I would think that the resource and resident dependencies would more simple, but to me it goes a bit further than most city builders and was slightly more like complex colony building's resources. The core gameplay loop is building things that: * Gather resources above and below ground for... * Satisfying residents, AND * Building more things that gather/create resources, house residents, or support underground exploration & defenses Underground is more interesting than above ground because there's an exploration element to it since there's no visibility of unexplored areas, and combat with the occasionally discovered enemy. In the last two of three total underground levels, areas can be uncovered that are enemy spawn points. Instead of feeling like I'm building a town or a rocket, there's a lot more of what feels like either waiting for resources, trying to trade/build something to produce more, or waiting for an enemy spawn to pass (once for all spawns, every 15-30 real time minutes) before progressing underground.
