Is This Seat Taken? Review: Polygonal Puzzling With a Side of Social Anxiety
Rating: 7.0 out of 10
Is This Seat Taken? turns the humble act of seat arrangement into a surprisingly clever and charming puzzle game. You’re tasked with placing quirky shapes, each with fussy preferences like “don’t sit near loudmouths” or “needs a window seat” into buses, cinemas, weddings, and more. It’s logic meets social anxiety, all wrapped in pastel vibes and cozy music. There’s no timer, no pressure... just you, some oddly relatable polygons, and a light narrative about chasing your dreams (and the perfect seat).
“The Perfect Seating Chart” - The Pros
+ Easy On-Ramp, No Manual Needed: Mechanics are intuitive and clean. You’ll know what’s up before the tutorial finishes its sentence.
+ Stylized Simplicity: The visuals feel like the UI designer of a meditation app decided to make a game and it works. Pastel polygons have never looked this emotionally complex.
+ Vibe-Check Passed: This is the polar opposite of Elden Ring. It’s chill, pleasant, and great for winding down, not winding up in a sweaty controller grip rage spiral.
+ Brain Teasers Without the Migraine: Some puzzles do hit that Goldilocks zone of "ah-ha!" without punishing you for breathing wrong. And this one works at various age levels.
+ Satisfyingly Low-Stakes: It’s musical chairs with anxiety riddled guests, and that's part of its appeal.
“Seat's Taken, By Repetition” - The Cons
- Repetitive Loops: Once the novelty wears off, you realize you’ve basically been solving the same puzzle in different venues. It's like a wedding DJ's playlist... it starts fun, ends with you checking your phone.
- Pacing Lags: The early levels are so easy you could play them while grocery shopping. It takes too long to hit any meaningful complexity.
- Narrative? Barely There-ative.: There’s light dialogue, but it doesn’t do much to elevate or anchor the experience. It's more of a whisper than a plot. I guess to some that isn't an issue but for me it's hard to carry fwd when the pacing doesnt quite get better as the game progresses.
- Made For Gen Z or Literal Zzzs?: Between the soft color palette and the slow progression, it sometimes feels like it was designed as a playable sleep aid.
“The Aisle Seat of Opinions” - The Neutral
+/- Minimalism Might Miss: The clean simplicity will either soothe your soul or bore it into another tab. Depends on your gaming diet.
+/- Character Quirks Are... a Lot: Some polygons have very specific needs (ie no noise, no dirt, must be alone)... maybe you should just stay home and Zoom the event, buddy.
Verdict: Chill Vibes, Mild Puzzles, Not Much Else
"Is This Seat Taken?" doesn’t break new ground, but it lays out a soft, well-designed picnic blanket on familiar puzzle turf. It’s charming, light, and cathartic but don’t expect it to evolve much as you go. The vibe is strong, the gameplay competent, but it’s more of a quick fling than a long-term relationship.
Great for puzzle lovers who prefer their logic with a latte and lo-fi beats. Just don’t expect fireworks unless you count a polygon demanding a window seat at a funeral.
