PPko Final Fantasy VI Review
Mar 27, 2025
Retrospectively, what can I say about Final Fantasy III? Well it’s an absolute goddam masterpiece, that’s what! The graphics are beautifully detailed. The music is gorgeously lush and emotive, perfectly setting the tone of every area and scene. The plot is pretty cool, especially for the time, but the blunt stilted dialogue often leaves something to be desired. Next time, I’ll play the pixel remaster which uses the GBA port translation which is apparently more accurate to the Japanese script. The difficulty curve is spot on — sure, it can get tough but a little strategizing can go a long way. For such a big map (especially when you have access to the airship), you’d think it would be overwhelming but, even if I did feel stuck, I almost always stumbled upon a side-quest or main mission before long. It was usually only after a long break that I got lost and had to consult a FAQ (or ChatGPT). Between the different characters and their mechanics, equipment loadouts, magic, and relics, you can really customize your experience which might be its greatest achievement as it becomes nearly infinitely replayable (if you have that kind of time, of course). RPGs are usually very daunting for me (FF7 can suck it) but I enjoyed the heck out of FF3 even 31 years later. From the opening cutscene to the end credits, FF3 is a total blast and there’s no way I can give it anything less than a perfect score!
