Well, after the incredible and terrifying experience of Resident Evil 7, I’ll admit I had some concerns going into Village… But in the end, I’m actually grateful they went in a different direction, more focused on action FPS!
It’s true that, from my perspective, it’s much more “comfortable” to face lycans, ghouls, vampires, etc., than a sadistic, violent, cannibalistic family from the deep American South.
On the other hand, going from the most intense horror experience I’ve ever had in a video game to a less tense shooter does slightly dilute the identity and tension that are so characteristic of the franchise. But if I say “slightly,” it’s because the story is genuinely very good and makes the game wonderful.
Besides that, in every other aspect, it’s top-tier. The graphics are stunning, the sound design is terrifying, the gameplay feels great, the puzzles are satisfying, and bringing back certain mechanics from RE4 only makes everything better.
In the end, even though Resident Evil Village’s story is its strongest point and everything else is of very high quality, it didn’t impact me as much as some others, which keeps me from giving it a perfect score. I think what it lacked was just a bit more tension. Or maybe it’s just the post-VII hangover?
In any case, it’s an AMAZING game and I highly recommend it!
And now, I think my Resident Evil reviews will go on a fairly long pause, until I can one day buy Requiem. It was truly a beautiful experience to play all the entries in chronological order of the story — something I highly recommend, even if it sometimes means playing slightly dated titles after some insanely good remakes!
