And at some point I think I also played the first one. But this time I decided I would play all the games in the series, in the chronological order of the story. And that didn’t seem like an easy task, since horror games tend to block me, even though I love the theme and I LOVE, but LOOOOOVE zombies. That’s how I jumped into Resident Evil 0. Compared to other entries in the series, I had never heard much about this episode, so I didn’t really know what to expect. And honestly, overall it was a nice surprise. It feels like it preserves the gameplay, atmosphere and style of the classic Resident Evil games. In other words, it should reasonably satisfy both nostalgic players and newcomers like me. The difficulty level can be relatively low on easy, but the puzzles remain quite challenging. After all, these are truly investigation games. And the story turned out to be surprisingly short, which I actually found to be a good thing! New modes are unlocked once you finish the story for the first time, but I decided not to dive into them, since my goal is to continue through the rest of the series, along with a multitude of other games waiting for me. But since nothing is 100% perfect, there are a few caveats. First of all, there is something that really tests your patience, especially nowadays with everything being so immediate and fast: the transitions that feel looooooooong every time you open a door or climb stairs. Okay, I know, it’s not that serious and it’s part of the charm. But in puzzle-focused games like this, where you need to try multiple things and revisit many places, it can start to weigh on you. Considering I played the HD version, maybe there could have been an option to disable this, I don’t know. Secondly, the story. It’s not bad, I don’t think they ever are, but for a “where it all began” entry in such a well-known franchise, I expected something more developed. That said, these issues do not take away from the quality and experience one expects from this title. So if what you want is a Resident Evil game, knowing that it belongs to the old-school era, go for it! I recommend it!
