Raystorm Nine Sols Review
Dec 29, 2024
Nine Sols is an impressive 2D action game that cleverly blends traditional Chinese culture with sci-fi elements, creating a unique and immersive world. However, its challenging difficulty might be a bit much for some players.
The game’s world combines Taoist philosophy (道家), Daoist elements (道教), and cyberpunk futuristic technology, creating a one-of-a-kind universe. What stands out the most is how it highlights the conflict between chasing technological progress and returning to nature. The story explores deep themes like technological advancement and bioethics. Even players unfamiliar with Taoist ideas can grasp concepts like "Wu Wei (無為)" and harmony with nature through the game.
As an action game, Nine Sols has outstanding controls. The combat system demands precise timing for every attack and defense, with very little room for error. The difficulty is intense, especially the final boss fight, which is even more challenging than Sekiro. It takes a lot of practice to master, but every successful counter feels incredibly rewarding.
The map variety and exploration may not quite match Hollow Knight, but they’re still top-notch. The game combines Souls-like and Metroidvania elements, giving players a rich and rewarding exploration experience.
The game’s 2D visuals are stunning, with beautifully detailed artwork and occasional 3D elements that add a nice touch. The music fits perfectly with the game’s world, and the overall presentation meets the high standards of modern 2D side-scrollers.
Overall, Nine Sols delivers a memorable adventure with its unique world and deep gameplay experience. While the high difficulty might be frustrating for some, it’s a must-play for those who enjoy a challenge, appreciate rich storytelling, and love exploring a distinctive universe.
