Schnegman Silent Hill 2 Review
Feb 14, 2025
A Masterpiece of Psychological Horror
Silent Hill 2 Remake is a masterpiece of horror gaming. I started out a bit skeptical - the beginning felt somewhat slow and the combat a bit weird - but after just a couple of hours, those doubts completely vanished. The game pulls you in with its suffocating atmosphere, masterful sound design, and incredibly haunting locations.
I never played the original 2001 release when it came out - I was only 11 at the time. I knew about the game, but it was way too scary for me, and my parents wouldn’t let me play an R-rated horror game anyway. I remember watching a friend’s older brother play it a couple of times, but that was the extent of my experience. Now, over 20 years later, I finally got to dive into this legendary game properly, and I can confidently say: it absolutely delivers.
The sound design is easily one of the best I’ve ever experienced in a horror game. It’s so intense that I couldn’t even play with headphones - it was too terrifying (and I am usually not easy to scare). The soundtrack is fantastic, and the combination of eerie ambient sounds and disturbing audio cues kept me in a constant state of stress (especially in the "closed" sections).
Visually, the game is stunning. While not highly interactive, the environments are meticulously crafted, enhancing the feeling of isolation and dread. The lighting, fog effects, and monster designs are all top-tier.
Bloober Team has done an amazing job modernizing the classic while staying true to the psychological horror roots that made the original legendary.
Compared to the Resident Evil 4 Remake, which I also played and finished in 2024, Silent Hill 2 is by far the superior horror game. While RE4 has better combat and more over-the-top moments, Silent Hill 2 excels at psychological horror and tension-building. It doesn’t only rely on jump scares but rather on a persistent sense of unease that creeps under your skin.
I almost have no complaints, but if I had to mention something, it would be performance. Playing at WQHD with max settings (except ray tracing), I did experience occasional frame drops and stuttering. However, these weren’t frequent or disruptive enough to significantly impact my experience.
Bloober Team absolutely delivered, and I really hope they get the chance to remake Silent Hill 1 and 3 as well. If you’re a horror fan, this is an absolute must-play.
Final Verdict: 9.5/10 – A must-play for horror fans!
