Sunrise Parabellum The Midnight Walk Review
Aug 13, 2025
This is one of those rare games where every single element, whether it's the art, the sound, the storytelling and the few mechanics.. really feels crafted with love and care and a very defined creative vision. From the very first moments, the game envelops you in a mesmerizing atmosphere blending horror, dark fantasy, Ghibli-like dreaminess and the eerie charm of northern/western european fairy tales
The art direction is simply extraordinary. The world is built with real handcrafted clay sculptures that were 3D scanned and brought to life with stop-motion animation. The texture, the work on lighting and shadows, the eerie movements.. all feel handcrafted in the most literal sense. Add to that top tier animation quality and an insane attention to detail, and you have one of the most distinctive visual experiences in recent memory.
The sound design deserves equal praise with excellent binaural audio that makes the world feel alive and enveloping. The soundtrack was my sweet and haunting companion during my journey and it remains consistently delightful with pieces that make you smile whenever they play. The voice acting is equally excellent.
Storytelling here is intimate and structured like a bedtime tale told to a child : gentle + poetic + layered with meaning. The pacing is impeccable as you're carried through a cast of memorable characters, varied biomes and inventive mechanics without ever feeling stale. One moment you’re exploring serene landscapes, the next you’re wrapped in a local folktale like The Tale of the Loathsome Molgrim, Coalheaven, or The Craftsman’s Heart. The stories are rich with detail, and the way they are told is just as important as their content.
There’s a constant sense of discovery through the new encounters and living worlds with their shifting moods. The game makes you feel a wide spectrum of emotions: joy, melancholy, wonder, even bittersweet sadness. It’s the kind of experience you remember long after the credits roll, and one you may find yourself wishing you could relive for the first time.
Special mention goes to features like Housy, which add a deeply personal and cozy dimension to the adventure. Even smaller touches like Potboy's animations or the way the rain is something he fears and avoids show how much thought and care went into every aspect. This is a game clearly made with passion and it shows in every frame.
If I had to name a flaw, it would be the crawlers. Their AI can be frustrating enough to break immersion at times, and it’s the only blemish on an otherwise wonderfully polished experience.
To put it in a nutshell I'll say that The Midnight Walk is an unforgettable journey that is beautifully crafted and emotionally rich. It is a walking sim that never gets dull and a tale that speaks to both the child and the adult within and a testament to what games can be when made with genuine artistry and heart. Thank you for this <3
