taterchips Grotto Review

It's a game that some will find frustrating. I found it frustrating at points. But the frustration is part of the point. If, like myself, you approach your task as Soothsayer with the best intentions, you will inevitably be misinterpreted and have your decisions inadvertently lead to horrifying outcomes. The important thing is to ride it out, and trust what the game is doing. While the gameplay is technically quite repetitive, the devs are able to squeeze out a surprising amount of variety out of a very simple gameplay concept. But the main draw is the story, the characters, the mythology, and imaginatively realized world all conveyed with one cave and basic animations. Grotto stuck with me in a way I was not expecting, and by the time I hit credits, I was fully invested in what it was doing. If you don't mind minimal gameplay, and you appreciate a novel approach to storytelling, give it a shot.
