taterchips Sonic X Shadow Generations Review
Dec 2, 2024
We all know Sonic Generations rules. But the big surprise here is just how good the other half of this collection is. Shadow Generations is an incredible breath of fresh air. Remarkably, it feels like Sonic Team actually learned all the right lessons from their time with Frontiers and delivered the best collection of levels this series has seen at least since the original Sonic Generations. Not only that, but they even iterated on the open zone design to craft perhaps my favorite hub world in the series. Even the gimmicky Doom powers are surprisingly well integrated and fun to use. Really there are no major flaws, except perhaps that the 2d acts are not quite as great as the 3d ones. The story is nothing to write home about, but it does carry over the improvements to the dialog and characterization that we saw with Frontiers. I'm hoping on the next game Ian Flynn will cut loose and deliver a truly memorable story. But ultimately that's not why I play these games. Quite frankly, I couldn't be happier with how this turned out, and for the first time in over a decade, I'm genuinely excited to see what Sonic Team cooks up next.
