thealexmott The Rise of the Golden Idol Review

May 8, 2025
The puzzles here are better, more challenging (while still being perfectly solvable without the internet's help), and certainly more creative than the first game, but the throughlines of the story aren't nearly as compelling. There's no downturn in terms of gameplay, but I can't say I got as invested in any of these characters or their conspiracies and follies as I did last time around. (For example, the end reveal in Case of the Golden Idol made me audibly shout, but this one made me go "...yeah okay") However, the fact that they're planning to release four DLC packs throughout 2025 gives me a bit of hope that they may yet build things out and end up with a whole package that lives up to Case. For now, I enjoyed it and I'm eager for more!
