Thomas Kingdom Super Mario Odyssey Review
Jun 24, 2025
In my opinion, Super Mario Odyssey is the best 3D Mario game to date, and I don't think anyone would say that's an unpopular opinion. But just what does make this game of unending critical acclaim so great?
Priority number 1 in making a game is having good gameplay, and who else but the face of gaming to provide it? Mario feels the absolute best to control than he ever has been in this game; his movement is incredibly smooth and he has an array of abilities that are familiar as well as new to keep platforming versatile and exciting.
The new feature for this 3D Mario game would be Cappy, the hat person who can control Mario's famous cap. You can throw him like a boomerang to hit enemies and objects, along with using him as a bounce pad to make that amazing platforming all the more great. But the most interesting of all is that you can throw him at entities to 'capture' them, essentially possessing and controlling them! This ability is utilised to its fullest throughout the game, from stacking goomba's to reach higher ground, all the way to breaking through walls as a tank!
Super Mario Odyssey returns to the classic non-linear 3D level design last truly found in Super Mario Sunshine, which was released in 2002. The game is divided into 'kingdoms', which are huge open worlds that have a unique theme and several platforming and puzzle challanges. The way to progress is by collecting Power Moons, and as they usually number in the hundreds for every kingdom it allows the open worlds to have so much more variety in activities to acquire them than any other Mario platformer.
The setting is usually where it's at in terms of world building in the mainline Mario games, and Odyssey does it the best. The game is about travelling the entire world that Mario and friends live in, and it makes every kingdom feel like it's own nation with it's own culture and economy. Even the maps of each kingdom are styled like travel leaflets with info of each of them found on the sides.
I find that Super Mario Odyssey is the best 3D Mario game as it does what the series does best and takes it to new heights. It builds on the gameplay of previous 3D titles to make the best controlling Mario we've ever seen, and it makes the fantastical world building the most in-depth it's ever been.
