thunderball Doom (2016) Review
Apr 8, 2026
The Doom 2016 reboot is an excellent example of how to bring a classic into the modern era. It provides a perfect amount of gameplay for a wide berth of audience, whether you're into competitive shooting, or just want to play a fun shooter for the power rush, Doom can provide that experience. The mechanics are tight and fluid, which feels very reminiscent of the original game. For the most part the guns hit, although I will not lie and say I used a variety of them. Once I unlocked the Super Combat Shotgun, and upgraded it fully it was the only weapon I used for 80% of the game.
The story is pretty good too. You get enough from the video codices to understand what happened, and give you a tidbit of things to come, while not having to overexplain everything. I will say I never once read any of the codices in the menu, because this is Doom and I want to run and shoot things, not lore dive.
That leaves my only complaint: going secret hunting feels counterintuitive to the gameplay. For me, this is a fast motion, kill 'em spree with guns. Taking the time to hunt on the map for secrets gets me out of rhythm, and for the most part was ignored when they are out of my way. I may do that for Dark Souls, BG3, or Skyrim, but I will not for Doom.
