Tofss Dragon Age: The Veilguard Review
Nov 7, 2024
A Dragon Age game in name only. Shallow companion writing with atrocious dialogue. Irresponsibly handled, important subject matter that has encouraged the tedious anti-woke brigade. The conclusion of the Solas narrative was used in the marketing materials to hook fans but is largely relegated to the periphery of the narrative, he essentially serves the same structural role as the illusive man in Mass Effect 2. The conversation system is even more basic than it was in Mass effect 1 and extremely frustrating. The protagonist Rook is constantly saying things outside of the players control, and as with Dragon Age 2 and to a degree Inquisition they're usually embarrassing quips or obvious observations. The gameplay is bland and extremely repetitive. Environments are attractive but bizarrely structured, littered with pointless time wasting "puzzles". Frankly I'm still in shock that this is a BioWare Edmonton game. The setting is handled carelessly, and complete repurposed, and insultingly simplified. The lack of cultural context and flavour in Minrathous was especially egregious. Having been familiar with the previous work of the writers involved I can't help but assume that perhaps the writers are underpaid/overworked because the lack of care and resentment shines through all too clearly. Having heard about the brutal layoffs imposed by EA I know I shouldn't have bought it, and you shouldn't either.
