Triforce Octopath Traveler 0 Review

While the quality of the game assets are high, and the content will last you 100 hours, the game is very tedious to play though. This adaptation from a mobile game with monthly releases being condensed into a single player package suffered from lack of editing. I'm sure they wanted to cut costs since they added the town building narrative and silent protagonist to the game, but the game really suffers, in my opinion, from not editing down the stories. The writing in general is on average mediocre. There are stand out moments in the game, for sure, but they are so few and far between. The Wishvale narrative starts strong and then becomes very shallow at the end. I don't find that final antagonist compelling at all after the previous villains being a similar flavor. Again, if the story was shortened and more punchy, the final antagonist wouldn't have felt common place. The battle system is very fun, for the first 50 hours. Once you hit the harder content you follow the same pattern over and over without much deviation. Another 50 hours of non evolved combat becomes extremely tedious. The town building is slow as well. You basically have to finish half the have to unlock 90% of the features. Then the final full customization options takes place after beating the game. If you're like me, you list interest a long time ago. 100 hrs of not being able to move certain buildings but now you can, you've just become accustomed to it. The game is solid. It's fun. The voice acting is mostly excellent. It's just too drawn out. It loses it's shine. I'm glad square enix ported a mobile gacha game to a stand alone purchase, but it wasn't a home run like the publication critics are saying, in my opinion. A lot of players on Reddit lament the shallow connection to all the playable characters compared to Octopath Travel 1 and 2. If you care about deep connections from those games, they are definitely absent here. The episodic nature of the mobile game was not hidden. Maybe if you played 3 chapters a month, this game would benefit from time spent away from the game, but who is going to do that?
