Trixxstrr South of Midnight Review
May 21, 2025
I just finished South of Midnight, an action adventure set in the mythos of the deep south.
Art style looked nice for all of the environments and characters even if I didn’t like the stop motion. My eyes can't see it as anything other than my graphics card struggling, like the old days of running beyond the limit of my hardware and only getting 15 fps.
But you can't turn it off for the cut scenes, so you still get to see the effect they wanted.
While the music wasn't my preferred genre, I could still appreciate the musicianship. However, the song lyrics, which directly described each game section, felt a little on the nose. A bit too Disney musical I guess.
Combat abilities were varied enough to keep things interesting. The fights were all a bit repetitive and probably too many of them, but not too bad. The platforming and running sections in between were entertaining enough, and some of it had an almost spiderman feel.
The deep south setting and stories were pretty interesting, even though almost everyone you meet, their story is a tragedy. Sad times all around.
It took me around 11 hrs to finish. I’d say overall it was ok, a mix of good and meh. 7/10
