BenTheCoug God of War Ragnarök Review
Feb 7, 2025
Pros
+ Ante was upped even more in regards to the gorgeous environments, with several standing out that I literally found myself wishing I could visit in real life.
+ Characters such as Kratos and Mimir once again have a strong presence, while Atreus, Sindri/Brok, and Frey’s characters are massively improved from 2018 in my eyes.
+ Combat, again, is magnificent and a breeze to master.
+ While the story isn’t perfect (more on that later), the major moments between Kratos and Atreus are possibly the most emotional in the series. Tremendous character growth and development is displayed.
Cons
- The story ultimately falls a bit short for me in comparison to 2018. Thor was less involved than I’d hoped and I didn’t feel Odin was fleshed out enough to really hate as an antagonist. His motivations felt shallow and did not hit the mark.
- The Ironwoods section. Jesus Christ. I don’t want to dwell on it, but it’s a hopelessly bloated drag of a chapter that nearly made me walk away. Ugh.
- A bit minor, but I felt puzzles were a bit neglected compared to 2018, which bummed me out. I also feel Ragnarok gives you a bit less lore as you go, which was disheartening.
- I think there’s a general lack of spectacle to this game. There were multiple moments in 2018 that made me audibly freak out due to sheer awesomeness. There wasn’t a single moment in Ragnarok that quite did the same for me.
