If you want an accurate port of Sonic the Hedgehog on your Switch, then this is your ticket! It’s fun to play on the go or at home on the TV and there are enough little bells and whistles added in to make it worth your while – even if this is your tenth time buying the game!
Sometimes old school shmups don’t hold up as well as they did back in the day. Thankfully this isn’t the case with Lightening Force, which happens to be one of the most accessible and fun space shooters I’ve played. This one’s a keeper!
Valkyria Chronicles 4 continued to surprise me with just how damn fun and addicting the combat is. Fun and memorable characters, a wonderful presentation, and spot-on controls make this a game you won’t want to miss.
Hardcore strategy RPG fans might find something to like here, but chances are you own a PC and have already checked out Wasteland 2. A frustratingly unfair combat system and gaudy graphics leave much to be desired.
Bad North is a fun game with light RTS and tower defense mechanics. The levels are short enough to be played in small bursts, which do lend themselves well to the handheld mode. However, the lack of meaningful tactics and strategies left me wanting more.
Not every game needs to be 100 hours long and cost $60. Cosmic Star Heroine hits the sweet spot of delivering fun gameplay mechanics with an upbeat and crazy story filled with charming characters and funny writing.
Overcooked 2 takes everything the first game did right and expands on it. You get bigger and crazier kitchens, more cooks, better controls, and more multiplayer options. This one’s best played with friends locally so you can hoot and holler at each other while trying to crank out as many pancakes as possible.
Dead Cells managed to surprise me over and over again. The gameplay is so much fun and the audiovisual production sublime. If you have a disdain for Roguelikes (as I usually do) I think you still should give this one a chance! There’s a lot to like here and it’s easily one of the best Switch experiences so far this year.
If you’ve got room in your Switch collection for one more Metroidvania, be sure to make it Iconoclasts. This gorgeous game combines fun gameplay with a unique story to create an exciting world to explore.
Banner Saga 3 is the epic conclusion to the series and one that fans are sure to greatly enjoy. There’s not much new here, but that’s fine given that the first two games were so fun to play. Since Fire Emblem was delayed to 2019, give this trilogy a shot!
Octopath Traveler is a fantastic example of taking a tried-and-true formula and applying new ideas to make it feel fresh and exciting again. The classic 16-bit graphics are enhanced with modern day effects to create a truly unique look. It features a fun turn-based battle system, wonderful music, and intriguing story. Don’t miss out on this Switch exclusive!
Pool Panic brings something truly unique to the Nintendo Switch and with it comes some zany characters, crazy levels, and off the wall animations. The game is a joy to play, but even with a plethora of levels to go through, the gameplay hook overstayed its welcome by the end. Still, if you’re up for something different on the Switch, look no further.
Some games just should never be made and Awkward is a perfect example of one. It’s not worth 99 cents let alone the $12 asking price. The premise had promise but the actual questions are ridiculously watered down and boring. Don’t bother with this one.
Runbow takes a simple concept and, pardon the pun, runs with it. The color-changing mechanic is easy to understand and puts a fun spin on what would otherwise be a standard platformer. Couch multiplayer is where this game really shines, so be sure to whip this one out at parties for a sure-fire hit.
Hollow Knight is yet another example of a great fit on the Switch. The game is extremely challenging and offers up some fun gameplay mechanics. It’s also very long for this type of game, so you’re sure to get your money’s worth!
Ys VIII combines fun combat with an intriguing story to create an unforgettable adventure. Exploring the island is made even more entertaining by constantly finding new people to expand your camp and make your characters even stronger. Don’t miss out this excellent action/RPG.
Hexologic is a wonderful puzzle game that really scratches that part of your brain that yearns to be tested. It’s easy enough for anyone to learn and it really does a fantastic job of introducing new gameplay elements as the game progresses. If you like Picross or Sudoku, then this one is a no-brainer.
Banner Saga 2 picks up after the first, so start there if you’re able to. With more classes, slightly enhanced visuals, and an expertly crafted story, there’s a lot to offer here. Fans of strategy RPGs should definitely consider this series.
Thanks to its superb writing and zany cast of characters, West of Loathing is a must-play turn-based RPG for the Switch. What it lacks in graphical special effects, it totally makes up for in the humor department. It is yet another great addition to your Switch library!
I never expected to be so enamored with a pinball adventure game, but here we are! Yoku’s Island Express combines fantastic visuals, sublime audio, and addicting gameplay mechanics to create a truly spectacular Switch experience. Pick this one up – it’s something special!
