Shock tactics so persistently silly that they become the equivalent of a flaming bag of poo on a doorstep. I will always defend the right of horror fiction to be horrible, but never excuse it for being so dull in its depravity.

Outlast 2 is what I hoped it would be. It’s horrifying, dark, gritty and disturbing. I was left wondering how the concepts that are implemented into this game were even conceived. After the team at Red Barrels gets a chance to relax from launch I think they should all check into a mental health wellness retreat just to clear their heads of the horror they created for our enjoyment. I also particularly enjoyed how Outlast 2 pays homage to other games in the industry such as DOOM and Mortal Kombat, this adds a rather quirky element of humor to these moments in the game. The new mechanics introduced are a major plus, the added layers to the storyline bring a new element to the franchise, and the sense of fear and dread are almost overwhelming at times. Well done Red Barrels, you smashed it out of the park and I will be sure to forward an invoice to you for the many ours of lost sleep I can look forward to from ANY noise I hear in the dark for many weeks to come.

Outlast 2 delivers on all its promises. It's as gory as horror games come and feels like a high-budget AAA game. The permadeath "insane" difficulty speaks to experienced gamers who want a challenge. My only complaint is the abrupt ending that cries for a DLC and leaves too many mysteries unanswered. Props for including player-friendly collectible tracker — that's how it should be done!

Outlast II is a marked improvement over the original Outlast in almost every way. It's still scary, yet utilises smarter designed scares to keep the tension high from beginning to end. The story is bound to be controversial, given the themes it tackles, but will easily demand and keep your attention from beginning to end. First person indie horror as a genre has lost its vision over the years, but Outlast II firmly stands tall as one of the best examples. It's absolutely terrifying and a staunch improvement over the original.

Outlast 2 is an intense adventure that will keep you up for many sleepless nights. Red Barrels knows how to keep players on their toes. The game's heavily-scripted scenarios can annoy if you don't get the mechanic at play immediately, and are thus forced to repeat a section multiple times, but generally the formula continues to work in Outlast 2. This is survival horror at its most base level, where you are a mostly defenseless layperson caught up in a horrifying ordeal, who would feel lucky just to escape with your life. The wait was indeed worth it, and Outlast 2 should be on the must-play list of horror fans everywhere.

Outlast 2 is a true improvement on its predecessor, with Red Barrel Studio planting its flag to claim the standard for horror games in 2017. From the beautifully horrific environments, the ambitious ideas to the sheer unsettling nature, it's disturbing in the ways you'll want from it. It makes this title truly interesting, even affecting. While it's aggressive in its assault on the player, perhaps to the point of becoming tiring, on the whole the game is very, very good. This is especially true of the exquisite second half of the game that sings to a developer in tune with its vision. Outlast 2 serves up an expertly crafted horror experience that will likely find itself burrowing into you even after your time in the Sonoran desert has come to an end.

Outlast 2 could well be the scariest horror game I have played to date. There were a few very minor gripes, but the isolation, desolation, and desperation were noticeable throughout. The sense of fear was more impactful than in the first game, and there were parts where I played hiding behind anything I could get my hands on. I went to Temple Gate, and I did not enjoy my stay. And by that statement alone, I have to applaud Red Barrels for creating such a brilliant game.

Never have I ever played a videogame as darkly disturbing and morbid as Outlast 2. I will be having nightmares for at least a month. The gameplay is simple yet complex and relies on you being able to keep your nerve. Forgiving a story that leans a bit too heavily on its forebears, Outlast 2 is an excellent horror game. It’s frightening, repulsive, and filled with the thrilling anxiety of the best games of its type. It does exactly what a sequel should. It delivers on all of the refinements and expansions you would expect to find three years from the original; and though its larger environments sometimes lead to repeated deaths, they also amplify the dread of being hunted. Outlast 2 made me uncomfortable, anxious, repulsed and frightened, and yet I couldn’t wait to see what it would deliver next. That’s a horror game done right.

The game wastes no time diving you into a blood soaked desert filled with crazy cultists and weird happenings. The main mechanics revolve around you reaching the end of the game while recording and documenting the events around you. Filling everything you can and piecing the story together. This differs slightly from the original game where recording and event can be viewed on your camera with a dialog over the event. Outlast 2 really tried to up the game of its storytelling and I like that.

Outlast 2 tries to introduce itself as a genre-defying game, but repetitive gameplay and lack of characterization have made it a so-so game, although it's worth a try. Moreover, the game gets really nasty at some points that makes it as horror as Saw franchise is. it's neither quite horror nor quite Saw-like, but you can have some fun with it for a few hours -maybe jump scare at some points- and then forget all about it.

If the number one thing you want from a game is a good scare, Outlast 2 is a big success. If you're looking for deep gameplay or replay value though, you'll have to look elsewhere.

Outlast II significantly ups the ante in the production values stakes, but its biggest sin is relying a little too heavily on trial and error in the gameplay department. There's an unsettling story here that wanders into some quite shocking territory, but the writing doesn't always sing from the same hymn sheet, and some murderous moments are delivered a little too frantically for the fiction to fully marinate. Despite that, there's more than enough good on offer here to tempt you back to church. Pull up a pew and prepare for a psychological onslaught.

Outlast 2 take its story to a whole new level, but it also undermines it by relying too much on chase sequences instead of letting the player explore some areas at their own pace.

Outlast II changes its focus on the “clasic” terror formula that worked well in the first game, for a more psychological twisted atmosphere popularized by P.T. While the places you go through and the jump scares are good, the gameplay can´t keep up to make a great experience. An average game that could have been much better with minor changes.

We wanted to see some development of Outlast's ideas in its sequel. Unfortunately, Red Barrels offers us almost the same experience as four years ago. In some ways the original game was even stronger. Still, Outlast 2 is a good horror, and there are a few moments which can scare you to death.

Without any exaggeration Outlast II is one of the best horror games that you will experience. The story of the game is really good and there is always a sense of horror and stress in the whole game. Audio and Visual wise the game is really good but Outlast II suffers from gameplay issues specially in chasing scenes. These parts doesn't have any excitement and they just exhaust you.

Outlast 2's highs are monolithic, but it spends the majority of its time thoroughly rooted in being just pretty good. That being said the Switch version is an excellent port on a technical level. Outlast 2 is without a doubt one of the best looking horror titles currently available on Switch, if not the most inventive.

Outlast 2 brings another horror-themed game to the Nintendo Switch catalog and while its ambiance, soundscape and plot are definitely worth checking out, the game doesn't quite rise above its predecessor in terms of overall quality. This is not to say Outlast 2 is not worthy of consideration, as its contribution to the Nintendo Switch is most definitely welcome but it's inevitable to compare it to the original and to think that it doesn't quite achieve its level.

As a horror experience Outlast 2 works as a bit of grindhouse exploitation. It's intense, it's sharp, and it's a grisly, beautiful game. But it's also so linear and tries to be so cinematic that it opens itself to comparisons to similar stories told in other media, and as weird as it is to say, Outlast 2 is also far too safe.

If you loved Outlast for its story and the fact that it stripped away any sense of viable defense, then there's something special waiting for you. The story really does sing. The larger scope of Outlast 2 does more harm than good. The confines of the Asylum from the first Outlast made for great chase scenes and intimate jump scares. With too much ground to cover, cheap kills, and weird transitions, Outlast 2 aimed too high for its own good. Its interesting story isn't enough to cover up for its poor design.

Outlast 2 does next to nothing to advance the survival horror genre in any meaningful way. It did very little to craft a coherent experience. At some point, it was decided horror games were more effective if they didn't involve combat; since then, they've flailed looking for ways to fill a now empty space, and a groundswell of aspiration, toward making videogames broadly about more than murdering for reward, has emboldened them. However, if the creators of horror games have silently, collectively agreed to redefine a genre, Outlast 2, packed with nonsense plot, engorged levels and frantic, anonymous bloodshed, feels like the definitive failure of their ambition. Don't be fooled by it, or its intent.
