Burnout Paradise really is one of the greatest driving games ever made and apart from the few issues here and there, it is hard to know how the gameplay could be better. Sure there could have been more effort put into the remaster to really make it shine on PS4 Pro and have it feel like something completely new, but under the hood, it's still the classic racer it was when it was released back in 2008 and that's good enough for me.

Burnout Paradise Remastered is a masterpiece, just as the original was ten years ago. While I think this could have released with a slightly lower price point, what’s here is cheaper than the base game and all of the DLC on Xbox 360. While Burnout Paradise is the first open-world Burnout game, it also the only. I hope this isn’t the last we’ve seen of the series, and I hope that this release garners attention of EA to make another. Burnout Paradise Remastered is stunning in 4K and at 60fps, the breadth of content available from the get-go will keep you busy for hours upon hours. Oh won’t you please take me home.

Burnout Paradise Remastered is a breath of fresh air for the racing genre. It takes the realistic aspects of racing and throws them out the window with fast and furious driving that feels great. The sense of speed achieved as you zip through the streets of Paradise City listening to Soundgarden's ‘Rusty Cage' is truly astounding. It's both frantic and fun. There are some frustrating moments and the visual upgrade isn't as big of a leap as I would like, but there is still a lot to enjoy. After finishing a few events, you'll wonder why the franchise has been gone for so long.

Burnout Paradise Remastered brings all the glory of the original game, most of the downloadable contents, and adds additional graphical effects and upscaled resolution (for consoles, that is). Paradise City gives you the adrenaline you deserve, letting you crash cars and race whenever you want to. It’s speedy and thrilling and will make you wonder how it came out for the previous generation of consoles when it’s obviously a game made from the future (which is today).

Burnout Paradise was one of the best racing games in the last generation and seemed like a title beyond its time. The remastered version still offers a game that has aged very well after 10 years and it has all the DLCs included. The only problem is that it's the same game with no new features, except graphics with better resolution. It is worth replaying it for nostalgia. If you have never played it, the time is now.

All in all, Burnout Paradise Remastered is an excellent re-release on both the PS4 and Xbox One. Despite being a game that was released ten years ago, this remaster modernizes the graphics and retains the excellent soundtrack and fast paced gameplay. If you love fun arcade style racing games, you must try and pick this game up now as it's a refreshing change compared to the more realistic racing games such as Forza and Gran Turismo.

My few complaints with Burnout Paradise Remastered are minor. They're mostly about the beginning, when you need to learn the way it functions, and the very end, when repetition may start to wear you down. It's both good and bad because nobody wants to play a game that's too easy to master or too difficult to learn. The pride and joy is in the chaotic driving that resembles a realistic world but doesn't sacrifice the fun that comes with doing a 50-foot-high barrel role through a big red billboard. If you have extremely fond memories of joyriding in Paradise City, there's nothing more you can ask for in Burnout Paradise Remastered. The improvements are generous, but after 10 years, the core that everyone loves is still structurally sound. It's good to see great games being revived and made available for today's platforms.

In certain respects, Burnout Paradise aged pretty well: under the revamped visuals and the smooth frame rate, this remastered version keeps the original gameplay unaltered, and that means sheer, chaotic fun and adrenaline-pumping races across Paradise City. Sure, some gameplay elements feel a little older today (where's the fast travel?), but honestly, who cares when you're having so much fun?

Players who ran through the game on PlayStation 3 or elsewhere will be put off by the lack of meaningful upgrades, and that's entirely understandable. The problem is that nothing here really adds to what already existed. The saving grace is that things haven't gone the other way, either. Burnout Paradise Remastered isn't really worth grabbing if you already have the original. Hell, said original is even backward compatible on the Xbox One right now. Burnout Paradise is unarguably a stellar racing game and it paved the way for the likes of Forza to do what it has done with its Horizon franchise, so for that there'll always be a place in my heart for it. It's a tough sell for returning veterans as the visual buffs are minimal and the game itself is unchanged. Though if you were too young and didn't get to play Paradise, there's enough here, especially with all of the extra content on-disc, to justify the price of admission.

It may not be the ground-up remake that other modern classics have been treated to, and you will likely be left disappointed at the minor overhaul the visuals have been given, but this is still a superb open-world racing game that feels like it'll be loved by fans of the original as well as new players jumping in for the very first time. It may sound cliched, but they simply don't make them like this any more.

Burnout Paradise offers all the excitement and crashes you remember from the original release. Now the game is upped to 60 FPS support and 4K, which adds to the experience. It wasn’t a whole complete overhaul of the 2008 release, but the opportunity to return to Paradise City and it’s accompanying Big Surf Island is one that many won’t (and shouldn’t) pass up, especially if you plan on bringing a few friends along for the drive.

Burnout Paradise Remastered brings me back to the happy times of teenage gaming. Being able to play one of the greatest racing titles again, on the PlayStation 4, is a delight. I realize being a major fan of the original release skewers my perception slightly, but I am aware my nostalgia plays a role in my enjoyment. As I mentioned, the only positive things here in terms of a remaster are slightly improved textures and playing a beloved racing game again that holds up amazingly well. There’s no new content of any kind so this experience falls into the slight upgrade category. Here’s hoping Alex Ward and Fiona Sperry over at Three Fields Entertainment can come up with something brand new in the true Burnout spirit.

Wild, adequately beautiful and a reminder of what a real need for speed truly feels like. Burnout Paradise Remastered may not be essential for anyone who has already spent many an afternoon committing its many and shortcuts streets to memory, but as an example of how racing games can fuse euphoria and momentum into one packed package of V8 action? Unfortunately, some of the core gameplay features start to feel old if compared to much modern games such as Forza Horizon or the upcoming The Crew 2, but if you can accept those compromises you will find in this Remastered edition a great racing game to play along with your friends.
