Out of the box, FIFA 20 is the one of the poorest releases for the series in some time. The gameplay can't get out of its own way at times due to poor defensive fundamentals, while the career mode is littered with bugs that were fixed in past iterations. Volta appears to be the only mode without major issues because the gameplay there is expected to be different. FIFA is always prone to patches (for better or worse), so if you're on the fence be sure to keep your eyes open as this game will definitely change during the course of the season.

FIFA 20 looks like another step up for the FIFA franchise, even if probably not so wide and brave as we could expect. Anyway, gameplaywise the new physics, the slower pace and a solid 1 on 1 defense open a whole new world in terms of approach and styles of play. The very new game mode Volta brings the street soccer back to videogames and it's simply a love letter to the spirit of football lived as fun.

FIFA 20 is fun, which is the most important thing. The developers in charge of gameplay have done just about all they can do to make this title a joy on the virtual pitch. FIFA 20 is pretty much what you'd expect from a new FIFA game. FIFA Ultimate Team continues to march on and grow, card packs and all, while the core gameplay has been tweaked, making attacking play feel great as you rip defences apart. The big new feature is Volta Football, and while it's a fun distraction, it's not quite as engaging as its FIFA Street predecessors.

FIFA 2020 builds off the success of previous installments. There aren't any groundbreaking steps that were taken to enhance the overall experience, but I don't think FIFA needs that just yet. Perhaps a few years into the future, they can look to make some major changes, but like I said before, their formula (the way the game plays) is working and it would be foolish to drift away from it. If demand were to go down, that would be the time to make appropriate adjustments.

The lack of changes to the gameplay are emblematic of the series as a whole. As PES continues to tweak its on-field game, FIFA tweaks the modes surrounding it. These tweaks are a success overall but the game finds itself lagging behind. Ultimately none of this matters. FIFA fans are going to continue to eat up the game and PES fans are going to continue to think of themselves as football purists. If you like FIFA, the new Volta mode is a ton of fun and the upgrades all around make it worthwhile. If you hate FIFA, this won't change your mind.

Apparently, EA Sports is preparing for a new generation of consoles and saved all the major changes in the mechanics and graphics for next year. Therefore, the only fresh solution was the Volta mode, which replaced last year's story and managed to bring new sensations to the project. FIFA 20 introduces a hefty amount of novelties and pretty much all of them are successful – especially the Volta can give tons of fun. Unfortunately – the biggest flaws that have existed in the series for years are still here – painfully schematic gameplay doesn't promote creativity, and the artificial intelligence doesn't deserve the name. These elements render each FIFA a much less compelling experience.

Fifa 20 has all the parts to make for a competent, impressive footballing title this year. I played Pro Evo last month and was pleasantly surprised by the fluidity and realistic football on display in that title and wondered whether Fifa could compete on the pitch. In a way it does, at least for a little while. Matches are genuinely balanced with a good use of physics and improved animations, but various glitches and bugs hold this game back from ascending to the level it should hit. The career mode is almost entirely unplayable if you want a realistic experience and unless you're prepared to put some serious time into Ultimate Team, Volta's short story mode may not be enough to keep you coming back for more.
