Gammafighter Magic: The Gathering Arena Review
Jul 6, 2025
I have good experience with trading card games, video games, and TCG video game clients, but this game is very unfriendly to new players.
There are too many things to list here really, but basic game mechanics are overexplained while Arena-specific mechanics are severely underexplained.
The RNG is also really out of whack. I can't believe how many times I've played a dual color deck and my opening hand has been all one color land and all of my spells are the other color. Or if I start with 3-4 lands in hand, i will draw nothing but lands for the next 6 turns, at which point I lose. But if i start with 2 lands in hand, I will not see another land for 6 turns at which point I lose. Just statistically improbable RNG all the time.
On top of that, the other players are usually awful as well. Taking forever to take their turns or mulligan. Or playing super denial heavy decks so you can't do anything. Or realizing they're going to lose so they just go AFK and it takes like 5 minutes for their timer to expire. Or just being super sweaty. Even in Bronze league when i was using the basic starter decks, I was going up against people with net decks full of mythic cards and cheating out 10/10s on turn 4.
Quick Drafting Final Fantasy was pretty fun for the most part. I was hoping to earn enough gems to unlock the battle pass, but the grind for gold is just an infuriating experience. It got to the point where i felt like i was punishing myself. For what? For cosmetics in a game I don't even like? Do yourself a favor and just don't start playing.
I've never been a fan of MTG, but I'm a huge fan of Final Fantasy and the FF set cards seemed pretty cool. This was Hasbro's one chance to hook me, but I'm even more soured on the brand than I was before. It was a really disappointing experience overall.
