The long-awaited Captain Blood action-adventure game from developers Seawolf Studio and General Arcade with publisher SNEG has finally been given a release date. The upcoming title is a revived Xbox 360 game based on the novels by Italian writer Rafael Sabatini about the adventures of the titular captain. Set on the Spanish Main during the 17th century, players will step into the pirate’s boots for a wild escapade through the buccaneer lifestyle, and the development team has promised a lot of blood to live up to the captain’s name.

Another game that endured a notable road to launch was STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl, as the FPS survival horror team combated war, cyberattacks, and a devastating fire that thwarted the game’s initial 2012 release. Thankfully, the sequel to 2009’s Call of Pripyat was finally released in November 2024 to great success.

Pirates as an open-world sub-genre are a bit of an untapped gold mine, but there are still games worth checking out regardless of the slim pickings.
