A Borderlands film is on the way.
Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford revealed on Twitter that a Borderlands movie is in production with Lionsgate . He also revealed that famed horror director Eli Roth will be directing the film. The movie will be penned by Craig Mazin, who recently won two Emmys for his work on Chernobyl. Avi Arad and Ari Arad will be producing the film, with Pitchford also serving as an executive producer on the project. Pitchford stated that more information is to come on February 27th at PAX East. In a press release from Lionsgate (via Polygon), Roth had this to say:
"I'm so excited to dive into the world of Borderlands and I could not be doing it with a better script, producing team, and studio. I have a long, successful history with Lionsgate - I feel like we have grown up together and that everything in my directing career has lead to a project of this scale and ambition.
"I look forward to bringing my own energy ideas, and vision to the wild, fun, and endlessly creative world of the game. Randy Pitchford and everyone at Gearbox have been incredibly supportive of my ideas - and it really feels like a perfect storm of creators coming together. We are out to make a new classic, one which the fans of the game will love, but also one which will find new audiences globally."
Roth is most known for his horror projects over the years. The director worked on projects such as Cabin Fever and Hostel.
The most recent game in the Borderlands franchise, Borderlands 3, is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. There is no word yet on when the film will release, or who will be starring in it. It is also unknown if the movie will adapt the stories from the games or will be an entirely original plot.
