The First Descendant Fell "Below Expectations" But Nexon Revenue Still Up Year-On-Year

While The First Descendant kicked things off with a bang when it launched in July last year, the live service looter shooter failed to retain most of its player base.

Despite the free-to-play game's strong start, publisher Nexon has deemed the game as performing "below expectations."

Despite The First Descendant's Shortcomings, Nexon Still Posts Record-Breaking Revenue In 2024

Nexon has revealed its latest fiscal year earnings report (via Games Industry), where the publisher recorded a 5% year-on-year increase in revenue amounting to ¥446.2 billion ($2.94 billion).

The company "delivered record-breaking full-year revenue," as net income was up 84%, though Q4 revenue was down 6% year-on-year.

As for The First Descendant, Nexon says the shooter came below expectations, "due to a decline in traffic attributable to lack of fresh content." However, the company did also mention that Season 2, which launched on December 5, "improved retention," though there were no numbers revealed.

Looking ahead, Nexon has signed an agreement with Tencent to bring "additional creative resources" for the development of its Dungeon & Fighter franchise in China. Tencent will provide additional production for "hyperlocalization, creating new experiences, and adapting the game...
