Niantic has announced the details of the upcoming April Fools' Day event in Pokemon GO, which will only last for one day on April 1, 2025. Continuing its tradition of 24-hour events for April Fools, this year, Pokemon GO is introducing a new kind of in-game encounter that will help trainers complete their Pokedex.
Pokemon GO started celebrating April Fools' Day even before its official launch in 2016. For the 2014 holiday, Google Maps released a video teasing that players would soon be able to catch Pokemon roaming around their neighborhoods in a mode called Pokemon Challenge. Two years later, Pokemon GO made that April Fools' joke into a permanent game, in which trainers across the world can catch Pokemon anywhere. Since then, Pokemon GO has celebrated April Fools' Day with various in-game events. For instance, in 2018, players were greeted with 8-bit graphics as a nostalgic nod to classic gaming and the first entries in the Pokemon series. Pokemon GO’s event for April Fools 2024 turned any throw better than “nice” into an “excellent” one, giving trainers a better chance to catch wild creatures.
