Longtime Blizzard art director Bill Petras has unexpectedly passed away at the age of 54, known for his work on World of Warcraft and Overwatch. Since the California-based development studio was first founded in 1991, Blizzard has grown into one of the most well-known names within the world of gaming, heralded as one of the studios to champion the MMORPG genre. Blizzard has created a plethora of iconic franchises from its roots with games like Warcraft and Diablo to recent hits like Overwatch and Hearthstone. Now, Blizzard fans are saying goodbye to a beloved studio alumni.
Bill Petras made a name for himself within Blizzard as one of the studio's most senior directors, with his earliest credits in some of the developer's first big hits. Petras first started with Blizzard working on the original Starcraft, before moving on to become the art director for the mega-popular World of Warcraft in the early 2000s. He would continue to have his hands in some of Blizzard's biggest projects, serving as the art director and senior art director for both Overwatch and Overwatch 2. Fans and colleagues alike are now coming together to honor the late Petras.
