Nintendo has confirmed that the retro-style GameCube controller designed to play updated GameCube titles, which are being added to the Nintendo Classics library for Nintendo Switch 2, will have disappointing restrictions. Alongside the Switch 2 launch in June, there will be a few GameCube games that can be downloaded and played via Nintendo Switch Online, and there will be an updated GameCube controller available for purchase to play those games, but it will be quite limited in functionality.

Spotted by VGC, Nintendo UK's upload of the Nintendo GameCube Classics reveal trailer had some fine print at the end that said: "The controller is only compatible with Nintendo GameCube — Nintendo Classics." In the past, the retro controllers that have been released for the Switch were clearly designed to be used for their original software, but they still could be used for other games and were recognized by the console as a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
