The next entry in the legendary Final Fantasy series has been officially announced.

Today Square Enix announced Final Fantasy XVI, the next entry in the iconic series. A trailer was released for the game, giving us a taste for the game's story and setting. The game will have a medieval theme, with players will play as Joshua, a bodyguard to the son of the Archduke. We see that many classic elements of Final Fantasy series will be in the game, including chocobos, dragoons, and summonings. The trailer put an emphasis on the game's summonings, showcasing Shiva, Phoenix, Ifrit, and what seems to be Titan.

On the PlayStation Blog, producer Naoki Yoshida states that the trailer for Final Fantasy XVI was running in real-time for both the combat and cutscenes. He states that what was revealed is a fraction of what the team behind the game has accomplished since development of the game begun, and that the game's team has grown from a handful of core members to a full-fledged unit.

Yoshida also revealed that the next big information reveal for Final Fantasy XVI will come sometime next year. In the meantime, he does expect gamers to be speculating about the game.

Director Hiroshi Takai stated on the blog that it may be some time before the game releases, but that it will be worth the wait.

"From the establishment of an all new development environment, to learning the ins-and-outs of the PlayStation 5, the team and I have taken on countless challenges during our journey to bring you the sixteenth chapter in the storied Final Fantasy franchise," Takai stated. "And though we're pouring our hearts and souls into this project each and every day, it may still be some time before we can get it into your hands. However, I promise it will be worth the wait!"

Final Fantasy XVI will release for the PlayStation 5.
